Description of AWS Class E309/309L-16 Coated Electrodes:

AWS Class E309/309L-16 is a stainless steel electrode for joining stainless steels to themselves or carbon metal and low-alloy steels. The carbon content present in the coated electrode metal is at the utmost, which gives it higher resistance to intergranular corrosion. UTP 6824 LC (309L-17) is mainly utilized for welding heat-resistant austenitic Chromium-Nickel steels of similar metals such as AISI 309 or 309S. It is also a good option for joining dissimilar materials such as 18Cr-8Ni stainless steel to mild steel and welding clad surfaces of steel.

In addition, it is used for welding dissimilar steels like joining Type 304 to mild or low alloy steel.
